charcoal drawing, hands by kc7655 charcoal drawing, hands by kc7655
charcoal(with a little pencil) on crescent illustration board
time: ? i have no idea. i do not draw with a stopwatch attached to my face
photo reference used under the creative commons [link]
this was pretty fun to draw. the thing i love about charcoal is how fast it can fill in those big black areas. you just cannot beat charcoal for contrast. i did have some trouble getting it as smooth as i wanted. i know a bad carpenter blames his tools, but i did not do a good job picking the paper for this. the paper is very rough, a little like very fine grit sandpaper. i used so much charcoal on this that i had to basically armor plate it with fixative to get it in my portfolio without ruining it. there is seriously about half a can on there. i bet i could wipe it off with windex if it got dirty. enough babbling.
comments are always very appreciated.
thanks for looking.

Sometimes I think contrast is the best invention ever. Here, you put it to good use.
I actually thought this was a photograph when I first saw it. Hah! Very impressive. The clarity on the hands, compared to the blurred face, added to that illusion for me. Lovely drawing.

Love this! This is a great rendering. I think your choice of light source is smart- emphasizes the hands rather than the chin.

I'm not much of an artist when it comes to rendering but if I can give one critiscm its the inside of the left hand. Something feels the slightest bit unatural...but really negligible.

I'm a fan.
